still killing it…

At 81, Carmen Dell’Orefice is still killing it. Born in New York in 1931, she is known within the fashion industry as the oldest working model. She is also famously known for being a muse to Salvador Dali and Irving Penn.

Her last appearance, only yesterday, was on the catwalks of New York Fashion Week.

Give the woman a medal!!

The Best Day Ever…

I saw David Wolfe last year when he was in town giving talks on the ‘raw food movement’. I was already in the thick of living 80% raw and was feeling pretty spectacular! The energy of the man was overwhelming, his talk started at around 6.30 was meant to finish at 9.30 but went beyond 11pm. His passion never waned; I got the feeling he would have continued way past midnight if it wasn’t for me and the many others nodding off in the back row!

Now my reason for getting on the ‘raw’ bandwagon is probably that of many others – ‘ill health’. I was eating foods that were all wrong for me, pasta, sugar, wheat, bad fats etc. Eating raw eliminated almost all of these processed foods immediately.

I chose to eat this way for many months and the rewards that came along with it were indisputable! My energy levels increased 100 fold, I started sleeping again after 10 + years with on/off insomnia, like a baby, drool and all! The pain in my body I had struggled but learned to live with started to dissipate and I recognisably developed a ‘youthful sparkle’ people could not help but notice; gotta love that! I can personally vouch for a life transformation. Not only physically but mentally -when my body is well my mind follows and vice versa.

My family and I are still on the raw food campaign, but I have to  be honest (head hangs in shame) and say that winter is a tough time for me to stay disciplined. I crave hot cups of milo, thick heavy pasta and sauces, bread and my worst vice; coffee! However, we have our own vegie patch and are currently harvesting kale, silver-beet (greg just bought some in and is currently preparing it for our dinner) parsley, japanese spinach, beetroot, celery, snow peas, sugar snaps and broad beans (brings back dry retching childhood memories) they taste so much better now! ha!

Mr Wolfe, ‘Best Day Ever Guy’ (as we refer to him as that’s his saying/motto) has a list of his top 10 ‘super-foods’.

A good way to get these top 10 or the majority of them into you easily is via a ‘green smoothie’, I know, I know, sounds like green slime grossness, but trust me, it’s not that bad and your body will love you for it! You can find plenty of green smoothie recipes online. I tend to stay away from ones with too much fruit/sugar but a frozen banana here or there never hurt anyone!

Brain Juice: Introducing the Designer Smoothie

Great for your mental stamina and vitality during those 10 hour design meetings, Belle has one every morning and stays fresh as a daisy all day! Delicious! (one thing it doesn’t do is prevent embarrassing photos)

Ingredients:

2 Medium sized Kale Leaves (picked fresh from your garden)

1 Small bunch English Spinach (including stalks)

½ Medium Sized Banana

¼ Avocado

1 Tbsp Raw Jarrah Honey

2 Tbsp Chia Seeds

1 Tbsp Maca Powder

¼ Cup Blue Berries

1 Hand Full of Broccoli Sprouts

¼ Cup Filtered Water

6 Holy Basil (Tulsi) Leaves

(Makes enough for 2)

All ingredients are Lactose and Gluten Free!

For you Chocoholics out there 1 tbsp Raw Cacao Powder can be added.

If you’re not a fan of honey, it can be replaced with 1 tbsp Agave Syrup

Method: Put all ingredients in a blender, Hit Blend, Continue until blended, Pour. Drink. Enjoy.

*Holy Basil is great for memory and focus, especially good for busy people, also it is renowned for its healing properties.

*Raw Jarrah Honey (although sometimes hard to get) is the most potent of Australian honeys, Low GI, highest antibacterial and antimicrobial qualities and it tastes good.

*Cacao Powder in moderation is a very potent antioxidant and very high in magnesium (which is the most common of nutrient deficiencies amongst humans), be cautious though, its deliciously addictive.

* Kale is an excellent source of calcium, vitamins C, A and E.

* Chia seeds are the highest source of plant based Omega-3

Most of these ingredients are safe; however, every person reacts differently to different types of foods, so research the ingredients to make sure they are safe for you.
